But for us, a poor culture fit is a dealbreaker no matter how <a class=\"aUxTjkknBMAVFSemygaWNefULIgZMVodcss \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/big-small-culture-key-every-deal-vaughn-stoll-wckcc\/?trackingId=v%2Bi2sGipR%2FyGV9GY8MA%2BsQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">big or small<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-2\">Six questions the right buyer asks about culture<\/h2>\n<p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If you\u2019re exploring acquisition opportunities for your agency, here are six questions serious buyers will typically ask early in the process. <em>And if they don\u2019t \u2014 it\u2019s worth asking yourself whether they\u2019re a company with a culture that you want you and your team to join.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">1. What is your availability for an on-site visit?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If a potential buyer only makes themselves available for a virtual meeting and won\u2019t take the time to meet you in person, they are showing disinterest in your business\u2019 culture right off the bat.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">2. What is your business\u2019 story?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The right buyer will be interested in <a class=\"aUxTjkknBMAVFSemygaWNefULIgZMVodcss \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/decision-sellan-interview-greg-dimartino-associates-vaughn-stoll-xojxe\/?trackingId=n%2Fo8Z8VgRC%2B8iuK4zR6j4Q%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">your business\u2019 history<\/a> and will want to learn where and why you started it, and how you grew to where you are today. At Brown &amp; Brown, we\u2019re looking for leaders and teams that are still <a class=\"aUxTjkknBMAVFSemygaWNefULIgZMVodcss \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/insurance-career-good-soul-qa-vaughn-stoll-y53fe\/?trackingId=4zWpGy6LSSudF5AeHpJSBw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">crazy about insurance<\/a>. If we uncover that you\u2019ve lost your passion for the business, we wonder: Has your team lost interest, too?<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">3. What can you tell me about your team?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If a potential buyer doesn\u2019t ask you a lot of questions about <a class=\"aUxTjkknBMAVFSemygaWNefULIgZMVodcss \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/part-1-taking-care-your-team-during-after-acquisition-vaughn-stoll-hbhke\/?trackingId=m9gBucV9TYyJktdG3QmfwA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">your team<\/a> and makes no effort to understand their <a class=\"aUxTjkknBMAVFSemygaWNefULIgZMVodcss \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/remember-how-much-your-people-matter-when-acquirer-comes-vaughn-stoll-jja8e\/?trackingId=YDEurrG%2BSS2D7e%2Bi3gmnUg%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">unique qualities and value<\/a>, that\u2019s a red flag.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>Keep in mind: If you answer this question by listing all the problems you\u2019re having with your team or all the ways they are falling short, that will be a red flag for the buyer!<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">4. How does your business approach selling insurance?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Do you want to report to a financial executive, or do you want to report to and work with others who have the same passion for insurance that you do? If a buyer asks detailed questions about how you sell insurance, they are probably insurance nerds, too. \ud83e\udd13<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">5. How do you like to spend your time outside of work?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A potential buyer who doesn\u2019t take time to get to know you personally likely won\u2019t care as much about your business compared to the buyer who is interested in learning about your life outside the office.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember79\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We believe interesting people make the best leaders. We gravitate towards those who take their jobs seriously, but not necessarily themselves. We\u2019re looking for sellers who have hobbies, a positive outlook, and a balanced life \u2014 we want to work with people who we like to be around.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">6. Have you thought about how your role will change post-acquisition?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If a buyer doesn\u2019t take the time to explain how your <a class=\"aUxTjkknBMAVFSemygaWNefULIgZMVodcss \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/owners-write-your-own-post-acquisition-story-vaughn-stoll-vl98e\/?trackingId=xdwKvN4OQhuMbHYwSVPt6Q%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">position will change post-acquisition<\/a> or if they promise that nothing will change at all, this should give you pause. Every acquisition brings changes to the seller\u2019s leadership functions in some way, and you deserve clarity about what that will look like.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-2\">Culture matters.
