That\u2019s why fostering <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/3-strategies-for-fostering-brain-health-at-work-it-starts-at-the-top\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">mental wellness in the workplace<\/a><\/span><\/strong> is a top priority for Brown &amp; Brown. We believe that prioritizing our teammates\u2019 total health and well-being results in healthy teammates who can better support their families, communities and customers, which is instrumental in our continued success as a company.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2057\">Last month\u2019s initiatives for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/get-involved\/awareness-events\/mental-health-awareness-month\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Mental Health Awareness Month<\/strong><\/span><\/a> saw our team participate in guided walking meditations, host an interactive event on the power of good sleep with Dr. Angela Holliday-Bell and more. These activities were a way for our team to recognize the challenges faced by the more than <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/mental-illness\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">1 in 5 U.S. adults living with mental illness<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and an essential reminder that people matter\u2014in life, in work and in acquisition.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2058\">If a potential buyer is more interested in who they can do without vs. having an interest in understanding your team\u2019s strengths, it should serve as a major red flag. Run for the hills if you find yourself across the table from a buyer focused on cost synergies and reducing staff.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ember2059\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__heading-2\">Insurance is a relationship business<\/h2>\n<p id=\"ember2060\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">People are the most valuable resource within an agency\u2014their industry experience, knowledge of the business and relationships with customers and carriers should be respected. Our teammates interact with our customers regularly, and these interactions play a significant part in keeping a business successful.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2061\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Here are three key ways you can prioritize your teammates as you embark on the acquisition process:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2062\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__heading-3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Long-term vs. short-term thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2063\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Making teammate cuts is often the result of short-term thinking.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2064\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Find a buyer who understands the importance of hiring and retaining talented teammates. When teammates are no longer needed in their existing roles after an acquisition, the business must ask how it can best use their talents across the organization.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2065\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__heading-3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Trust with carriers and customers goes a long way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2066\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">After every acquisition comes change, including the possibility that your agency will be renamed or relocated. Suppose personnel changes are also added to the mix. In that case, the customer must accept a rename or relocation change while enduring a more significant blow: \u201cSorry, you\u2019re not working with Sally anymore because she\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2067\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What will the customer think?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2068\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Connections are often what retain customers through an acquisition. When a customer has a history of working with the same person who\u2019s always taken care of their business, and that person reassures them that the new changes are positive, they\u2019ll likely stay. If that trusted contact is gone, they are less likely to stick around because they have lost that connection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2069\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__heading-3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Happy, healthy teammates produce the best results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2070\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A team that believes an acquisition is a positive opportunity for them is a team that will deliver for their customers, carriers and new acquirers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember2071\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">When screening potential buyers of your business, ask these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li id=\"ember2072\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><em>Do you have long-term tenure with your teammates?<\/em><\/li>\n<li id=\"ember2073\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><em>What support have you provided teammates regarding their total health and well-being, brain health, diversity and inclusion, wealth enhancement and other benefits?<\/em><\/li>\n<li id=\"ember2074\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><em>Can you describe your company culture and share how important culture is in your business?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"ember2075\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__heading-2\">Actions matter<\/h2>\n<p id=\"ember2076\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Every leader says they care about their people, but not everyone puts their money where their mouth is. Look for a buyer who doesn\u2019t objectify people to get the best results. Look for one that displays positive intent and demonstrates the ways they help their people stay healthy and advance in their careers.
