And, yes, women are more likely to feel this guilt than men.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember50\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">As women, we often find ourselves shouldering numerous responsibilities. According to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2023\/04\/13\/in-a-growing-share-of-u-s-marriages-husbands-and-wives-earn-about-the-same\/?utm_source=AdaptiveMailer&amp;amp;utm_medium=email&amp;amp;utm_campaign=23.04.13%20-%20GENERAL%20breadwinner%20wives&amp;amp;org=982&amp;amp;lvl=100&amp;amp;ite=11465&amp;amp;lea=2359721&amp;amp;ctr=0&amp;amp;par=1&amp;amp;trk=a0D3j0000134o6sEAA\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Pew Research<\/a><\/span>, even when spouses earn about the same, women still spend more on caregiving and housework than their husbands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember51\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">And yet, we all know that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/my-foundational-5-how-showing-up-for-yourself-helps-you-show-up-for-others\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">showing up for yourself helps you show up for others<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember52\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">No one can pour from an empty cup. When we prioritize self-care, we replenish our reserves, enabling us to share our gifts and uplift those around us. It alleviates the guilt when we stop thinking of self-care as stepping <em>away<\/em> from our responsibilities and instead <em>fulfilling <\/em>one of them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember53\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">There are a plethora of self-care routines, tips and tricks online, but true self-care goes beyond mere actions. It requires a mindset shift. Here are three ways to refocus your relationship with self-care. And there\u2019s no better time than now \u2014\u00a0Women\u2019s History Month.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember54\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>1. Make a declaration of self-worth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember55\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">We can easily become defined by our roles as parents, teammates or partners, but we can lose ourselves if we don\u2019t take time to reconnect with the essence of who we are beyond these labels. Our worth is more than what we provide to others. The first step toward prioritizing self-care is acknowledging your self-worth. When you consciously or unconsciously decide that you are always a second priority, the world will respond in turn. However, amazing things happen when you declare, through voice and action, that you matter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember56\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Your actions reflect the investment you make in yourself. Every action you take today shapes the reality of tomorrow. By investing in self-care, you\u2019re laying the foundation for a more energized and fulfilling tomorrow, which you deserve.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember57\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">As a business leader, I\u2019ve also found that by prioritizing self-care, I set a precedent for my team members to do the same. Through example, I work to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/company-culture-is-taking-center-stage-in-2023-heres-what-hr-teams-need-to-address\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">create a culture<\/a><\/span> within which we recognize and value the connection between well-being and success and more openly appreciate each other\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember58\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>2. Take control of your dimmer switch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember59\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">We have the power to adjust our energy levels based on our needs. While some days may call for full wattage, where we show up at our best, others only call for a gentler glow. Understanding when to shine and when to temper is a powerful tool for resilience.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Leaders often feel like they need to emit complete confidence and enthusiasm at all times, but even great leaders face moments of fatigue and uncertainty, too. During these times, it\u2019s essential to acknowledge our limitations and honor our need for rest, reflection and self-compassion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Adjusting our energy levels enables us to show up authentically in every situation. Whether we\u2019re called to exude strength or to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/5-ways-to-be-a-vulnerable-leader-in-the-workplace-and-why-its-so-important\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">embody vulnerability<\/a><\/span> \u2014 both equal characteristics of leadership \u2014 we can meet each moment with presence and integrity. This allows us to cultivate deeper connections with ourselves and others.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>3. Find what works for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all concept. What rejuvenates one person may not necessarily have the same effect on another. It doesn\u2019t have to be a grand gesture; even small actions can significantly impact your vitality and joy. The key lies in finding what works for you.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Here are a couple of actions that work for me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Embracing moments of solitude: <\/strong>There\u2019s something profoundly beautiful about quiet moments, especially during the early hours of the day. I use my mornings as a time of reflection and introspection, and I set intentions for the day ahead. I\u2019ve been inspired by Robin Sharma\u2019s book, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/AM-Club-Morning-Elevate-Life\/dp\/1443456624\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><em>The 5 AM Club: Own Your Morning. Elevate Your Life<\/em><\/a><\/span><em>.<\/em> I recommend it for anyone looking to transform their mornings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practicing gratitude: <\/strong>There\u2019s a proven correlation between joy and gratitude and truly loving yourself. I\u2019ve written before about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/thank-you-universe\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">how to practice gratitude daily<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">When we think of self-care as a luxury, we attach guilt to it. We make it a second priority and, therefore, make ourselves a second priority. But self-care is necessary for our overall well-being and the well-being of those around us, not for special occasions or moments of true burnout. The key is to identify what brings you joy and commit to incorporating it into your <em>daily <\/em>routine. It could be journaling, cooking, running, meditation or reading.
