Leaving more than 400,000 positions open, \u201call facets of the insurance industry will struggle to replace workers at every level,\u201d says a <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamber.com\/workforce\/education\/the-america-works-report-industry-perspectives\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">U.S. Chamber of Commerce report<\/span><\/a>. This is because less than 25% of our industry is currently under the age of 35.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember49\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">This <strong>Insurance Careers Month<\/strong>, we need to ask ourselves: How do we approach recruitment in 2024? Are we seeking a mere team member, or are we hunting for that \u201cculture fit\u201d or \u201cculture add?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember50\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Culture fit and culture add are about how well teammates align with a company\u2019s vision, goals and beliefs \u2014\u00a0and how new perspectives can be a plus one to the existing culture. When teammates click as a good culture fit, they bring the right mix of skills \u2014 both hard and soft \u2014 that gel with the rest of the team. They\u2019re seamlessly on the same wavelength as the company\u2019s mission and values.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember51\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">But culture fit is not easily found. After just 30 minutes with someone, making a hiring decision can feel like threading a needle blindfolded. How can we be confident we\u2019re making the right choice when asking the same conventional questions?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember52\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Seven years ago, Powell Brown, CEO at Brown &amp; Brown, tossed out a handful of interview questions that shook the very foundation of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/teammate-onboarding-how-to-make-it-more-than-an-introduction-to-the-company\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">my hiring process<\/a><\/span>. I shared these gems with our recruiters during one of their visits.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember53\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">A few questions, in particular, struck a chord with me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhat experiences do you feel had the most impact on shaping who you are today?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGive me an example of how you\u2019ve taken control of your career?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat does it take for you to give more than you think you can?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember55\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">These are not just any old questions; they are a gateway to intimacy in the interview.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember56\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">In a Brown &amp; Brown interview, we\u2019re not looking for polished r\u00e9sum\u00e9 highlights; we crave stories that reveal the essence of a person.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember57\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">So, why do we dwell on these deeper questions?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember58\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Because they unveil layers of someone\u2019s personality that traditional queries fail to penetrate. When a candidate hesitates, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/5-ways-to-be-a-vulnerable-leader-in-the-workplace-and-why-its-so-important\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">pondering whether to divulge<\/a><\/span> a personal or professional tale, you know you\u2019re onto something profound. It\u2019s about understanding who they are beyond their skillset.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember59\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>How do you find teammates who will be a culture fit or culture add?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Here are three tips for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/5-ways-to-be-a-vulnerable-leader-in-the-workplace-and-why-its-so-important\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">leaders<\/a><\/span> to enhance their hiring strategies:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dive deep and ask gritty questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Don\u2019t shy away from the tough stuff when crafting your arsenal of interview questions. Embrace the gritty questions like old friends. They\u2019re not just conversation starters; they\u2019re windows into the true essence of a candidate. They can provide insights into a person\u2019s willingness to solve problems that may arise \u2014 a key factor for those working in the industry \u2014 and grow within your organization by exploring the different paths within it. They\u2019ll also help you understand their journey, hurdles and what drives them to surpass their limits.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember63\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Seek out candidates who add to your culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Recruitment blunders often boil down to one crucial misstep: overlooking cultural synergy. It\u2019s not enough for a candidate to tick all the skill boxes; they must add value to your culture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Remember, insurance isn\u2019t just about policies and claims; it\u2019s about solving problems. Seek candidates with an innate knack for problem-solving and a willingness to participate in rotational programs. It\u2019s the lifeblood of our industry, from underwriting to customer service. If a candidate isn\u2019t a born problem solver, insurance isn\u2019t going to be a culture fit. Seek candidates who won\u2019t just learn from their mistakes but actually consider them <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/the-power-of-gifts\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">gifts<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">3.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Track what is working well<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">What motivates your team? What fuels their passion? And, most importantly: What does it take for them to give more than they think they can?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/company-culture-is-taking-center-stage-in-2023-heres-what-hr-teams-need-to-address\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">These insights<\/span><\/a> aren\u2019t just HR data points but the building blocks of enduring relationships. During annual reviews, be sure to ask: \u201cWhat inspires you?\u201d Maintain a record of team members\u2019 needs and sources of inspiration, then provide them with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/talent-breaks-all-ties-giving-teammates-the-tools-they-need-to-grow\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">tools<\/a><\/span> to do their job well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember69\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><strong>Genuine interest is the currency of connection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember70\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">As I\u2019ve navigated the path to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/do-you-have-what-it-takes-to-be-a-leader-in-2023\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">leadership<\/a><\/span>, I\u2019ve learned that genuine interest is the currency of connection. Take Powell as my leader, for instance, when he asked about my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbinsurance.com\/news\/yes-and-how-improv-teaches-us-to-lead\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">improv<\/a><\/span> escapades last year. His sincere curiosity about my experience spoke volumes and transcended mere small talk in our conversations. It wasn\u2019t about grand gestures; it was about being present and genuinely caring.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">February beckons those of us in insurance to unravel the mysteries of culture fit and seek teammates who resonate with our mission.
