Some we hear from our parents. Others get passed around like conventional wisdom. But not everything we\u2019re told is true.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cCredit cards are bad.\u201d (Not if you know how to use them.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cRenting is throwing money away.\u201d (Not if it gives you flexibility or saves you from buying at the wrong time.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou have to be rich to invest.\u201d (False. You just need to start.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBudgeting is about cutting back.\u201d (It\u2019s about choosing what matters most.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/power-financial-literacy-andrew-watts\/?trackingId=d4o7gwR6QRK4qrXI7zx28A%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Literacy blog series<\/a>, we\u2019ve dug into these kinds of myths and offered alternatives worth considering. Today, National Financial Awareness Day, I want to recap some of those takeaways and invite you to explore the full series if you haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, what you don\u2019t know can hurt you when it comes to your finances. But also, what you know can be transformative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Know what you actually make<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you understand the difference between gross pay and take-home pay? Or how bonuses, commissions and benefits factor into your overall compensation? If you\u2019re making decisions based on your salary alone \u2014 and not the real number that hits your bank account \u2014 you\u2019re operating with only part of the picture. Set a goal. Commit to the plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vague goals like \u201cI want to save more\u201d rarely work. The people who make financial progress set specific targets \u2014 like paying off $5,000 of debt in six months \u2014 and then build a system to track and automate that plan. Think of your financial life like a GPS: You need to plug in a destination to chart the right path. Don\u2019t wait to invest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest myths out there is that investing is complicated or risky, so you should wait until you \u201cknow more.\u201d But knowledge often comes from doing. You don\u2019t need to be an expert to start investing. You just need to start. Time is your most valuable asset; the earlier you begin, the more powerful your returns can become. Start with simple investment options and build from there. Diversify everything<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diversification is one of the most reliable ways to reduce risk and increase long-term stability. That means spreading your investments across different asset classes or investment types (stocks, bonds, etc.), industries and even time horizons. But diversification isn\u2019t just for portfolios. You can apply the principle to income streams, your personal skill development, and even how you manage debt. It\u2019s the closest thing to \u201cfree money\u201d most of us will ever get: interest earning interest on interest over time. But it only works if you give it time to work. That\u2019s why starting early is more important than starting big. Optimize along the way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Financial literacy isn\u2019t a one-time thing. It\u2019s an ongoing practice. Every six months or so, I recommend doing a mid-year financial health check. Are your goals still aligned with your priorities? Has your spending changed? Are you maximizing your employer benefits or tax opportunities? But it\u2019s one of the hardest habits to master \u2014 and one of the most important. The ability to live below your means is what gives you freedom, flexibility, and peace of mind.<\/li>\n<li>Small changes can equal big wins. Financial transformation doesn\u2019t have to mean overhauling your life. Round up your savings transfers. Cook one more meal at home each week. Cancel a forgotten subscription. These are the kinds of habits that accumulate over time, and the best part is, they\u2019re doable and really not that hard to accomplish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019ve made it this far, congrats!
